“Black Spires and Marmalade Skies” is a series of paintings by Mao Haimura that has been in continuous production since 2024. This work symbolizes the sharp and refined intellect that has propelled human progress as the “Black Spires,” while the “Marmalade Skies” represents a primordial sensory world that exists before quantification. The central theme of the series is the tension and harmony between these two forces. It explores the dualities of sensation and reason, logic and play, knowledge and belief—placing itself within these opposing forces and moving fluidly between them. It is in this act of navigating both realms that “freedom” is found, and through the attainment of this freedom, spiritual richness is realized.

The series consists primarily of abstract paintings dominated by shades of orange, incorporating sharp spire-like forms alongside playful motifs. The orange hue, which forms the foundation of the “Marmalade Skies,” evokes a deep sense of reassurance and dependency, while also carrying a universal sense of longing and mystique. In contrast, the “Black Spires,” symbolizing reason, is boldly rendered using the world’s blackest paint, expressing moments in which sharp intellect and refined logic divide through and obscure the formless realm of sensation. The work seeks to provide not only decorative delight and the familiarity of a picture book but also to stimulate the viewer’s mind, evoking a sense of exhilaration and happiness.

The style of the series merges elements of abstract expressionism from modern and contemporary art with the vibrant sensibility of 1960s psychedelic art. The paintings employ a mixed-media approach, incorporating oil and acrylic alongside unconventional materials such as whole egg, gofun (powdered oyster shell), and mica, creating layered textures and organic depth. This technique is deliberately chosen to emphasize the theme of the series—the interplay of reason and sensation, and the overlapping of different times and spaces.

「黒い尖塔とマーマレードの空」は、灰村マオが2024年から継続して制作している平面絵画シリーズである。本作は、人類の精神を前進させてきた鋭く洗練された理性を「黒い尖塔」として、定量化される以前の原初的な感覚世界を「マーマレードの空」として象徴し、両者のせめぎ合いや調和をテーマとしている。感覚と理性、論理と遊び、知性と信仰――こうした二項対立のあいだに身を置き、両者を行き来するところに「自由」は見いだされる。この自由を獲得することで、精神的な豊かさが実現するのである。

 

オレンジ色を基調とした抽象絵画を主軸に据え、鋭利な尖塔の形状や遊び心のあるモチーフを組み合わせている。「マーマレードの空」として本シリーズの根幹を成しているオレンジ色は、深い安心感や依存の感覚を喚起するとともに、普遍的な憧憬や神秘性をも内包する色である。理性を象徴する「黒い尖塔」は、世界一黒いと称される塗料を用いて大胆に描きだされ、精神の鋭さや洗練された論理が無形の感覚を切り裂き覆い隠す瞬間を表現している。さらに、装飾的な感動や絵本のような親しみやすさを意図しながらも、鑑賞者に精神的な刺激や高揚、幸福感をもたらすことを目指している。

 

作風は、近現代美術における抽象表現と、1960年代のサイケデリックアートにみられるポップな感覚を融合させたものとなっている。制作には油彩やアクリルに加え、全卵、胡粉、雲母といった異素材を取り入れたミクストメディアを用い、多層的な質感と有機的な奥行きを生み出している。こうした技法は、理性と感覚が交錯し、異なる時間や空間が重なり合う本シリーズのテーマをより強調するために選択されている。
